“I’m sick of the usual roles”
We hear you have a great role in your next film?
Yes, the film is Kisse Pyar Karoon directed by Ajay Chandok. I am playing a streetwalker who is very filmy -she’s not a typical prostitute. She smitten by films and if she likes a film character she takes on that image-she’s very loud. She starts imitating the current favourite film star.
How did you get the role?
When Ajay Chandok called me and said I have a good role for you, I flatly said I was sick of film roles of the same kind being offered to me and I was not interested in any role. But he insisted I listen at least…I’d get different looks each time I was imitating a different Bollywood heroine-different attire different poses etc. “You are this ‘tapori’ type of girl. Wouldn’t you like to do it?” So I heard the role and said “Wow”. And Ajay is such a fine guy that whoever works with him would want to work with him again.
How did you prepare for it?
I saw Chameli and bits of Julie to see how because I had to do bits of Chameli and Neha Dhupia in Julie-otherwise Ajay was pretty clear about what he wanted. He wanted bits of Shweta Menon to show up too.
How has it shaped up?
Whoever has seen the film is positive about it so I am happy. The film has all the ingredients of a commercial success. I am doing Madhur Bhandarkar’s corporate-we’ve started shooting. I am doing Bubby Kent’s next film an emotional thriller. Aarti Chhabria and I have been signed.
When did you start acting?
When I was 14 I did a Malayalam film ‘Anashweram’. I was shooting with Mamooty - he was my first hero. I was 14 and they pampered me to death. I wasn’t interested in acting but I did it because the director of the film was my dad’s friend. And each time I had to say any dialogue I’d say “Nahin chocolate doge to hi dialogue boloongi?”
I still remember the small 5 star chocolates which Mamooty had stocked up on and I’d eat one and say “I love you!” which was my dialogue.
Now after 16 years I am doing another Malayalam film. I play a Bombay girl and have a journalist boyfriend who goes to visit a tantrik - it’s a very authentic kind of film. A real tantrik is there and he’d come to the set
